An ancient secret from Kashmir, rewoven for today.
Some textiles cover you. And then some textiles seem to understand you — that respond to your body, your climate, your moment — as if they were made, just for you. The GEETIKAGULIA handwoven woollen shawl is the second kind.
Deep in the Kashmir Valley, where the Himalayas create a world apart — a place of extraordinary natural beauty and even more extraordinary craft heritage — there existed an ancient weaving technique that most of the world had forgotten was possible.
The finest, most delicate fibres of the fleece, drawn out and woven in their raw, unconsolidated state — without the twisting and tightening that spinning imposes — into a fabric of almost impossible lightness. A fabric that retained the fibre's full natural architecture. A fabric that breathed and responded and regulated in ways that no spun wool could replicate.
This technique was not lost because it was inferior. It was nearly lost because it was extraordinarily difficult. It demanded a level of skill, patience, and tactile sensitivity that took years to develop and a lifetime to master. It could not be hurried. It could not be mechanised. It could only be learned, slowly, from the hands of someone who already knew.
At GEETIKAGULIA, we found the people who still know. We revived this ancient weaving tradition and brought it into every shawl and stole we make — because some things are too extraordinary to be allowed to disappear.
Extra Fine 100% Merino — The Gold Standard of Fibre
Not all wool is created equal. And the wool in our shawls sits at the very top of what the natural fibre world can offer.
Our shawls are equally at home in winter and summer. Based on the remarkable properties of fine, unspun wool and the ancient Kashmiri weaving technique that preserves those properties fully. Here is how it works -
WARMTH WITHOUT WEIGHT
The unspun fibres in our shawls are not compressed or twisted as spun yarns are. They retain their full natural loft — the microscopic crimp and curl that makes wool fibres trap air between them in thousands of tiny pockets. Our shawls trap an extraordinary amount of air within their ultra-fine, uncompressed fibre structure. You will be warmer in one of our shawls than you expect. Considerably, delightfully warmer.
MOST ELEGANT AIR-CONDITIONING YOU WILL EVER WEAR
Wool in summer. For many people, this combination seems counterintuitive at best and uncomfortable at worst. Wool is one of nature's most sophisticated moisture management systems. Merino wool fibres actively wick moisture away from the skin — drawing perspiration outward, away from the body, where it evaporates. The result is a fabric that keeps the skin drier than almost any other natural material. And dry skin, as any thermodynamicist will tell you, stays cooler.
Between the extremes, our shawls breathe. They respond to the fluctuating temperatures of transitional seasons with a natural intelligence — warming when the air cools, releasing when the body heats. No other material adapts with this kind of fluidity. No synthetic fibre has yet been engineered to match what Merino wool, woven in this ancient way, does effortlessly and instinctively.
Every shawl is woven on a handloom by skilled weavers who carry the knowledge of this ancient Kashmiri technique in their hands — knowledge that cannot be downloaded, automated, or rushed.
Weaving with unspun fibres demands an additional layer of skill and sensitivity. Unspun wool is fragile in a way that spun yarn is not — it cannot be treated roughly, cannot tolerate inattention, cannot be woven with anything less than full and sustained care. The weaver must feel the fibre constantly, adjusting their touch in real time, reading the fabric as it forms beneath their hands.
This is why this technique nearly disappeared. It is simply too demanding for any process that prioritises speed over quality. And it is precisely why the resulting fabric is unlike anything else in the world.
In an era of fast fashion — of synthetic fibres engineered in laboratories, of garments made to be worn twice and discarded, of accessories whose entire lifespan is measured in months — our handwoven Merino shawls represent something almost countercultural.
They are made from a single natural fibre, grown on an animal, processed with minimal intervention, woven by human hands using a technique older than industrialisation, in a way that preserves and celebrates the extraordinary natural properties of the material rather than overriding them.
They will last for years. They will age beautifully. They will become, over time, more yours — absorbing your particular way of wearing them, your particular drape and fold, your particular history together.
